Pushing 40, coping with the break-up of a four-year relationship, Julia Sweeney suddenly had a frightening revelation: "How could I forget to have a family?" Admittedly, her prospects were bleak. She was previously divorced, with no current boyfriend - and no uterus (the result of cervical cancer and a hysterectomy).
Undaunted, Sweeney decides to become a single mother, by adopting a girl from China. Along the way, she will have to prove to herself that she is up to the challenge of motherhood. Beautifully written, wonderfully performed, In the Family Way is Sweeney's comedic monologue about the daughter who changed her life.
Julia Sweeney was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1989-94, and is best known for the mysteriously androgynous character, "It's Pat!". She has also served as a consulting producer on Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. She performed her first monologue, God Said, "Ha!", in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and on Broadway, as well as in a film produced by Quentin Tarantino. The CD version was nominated for a Grammy. Her most-recent monologue is Letting Go of God, which she has performed on both coasts.
